Fabulous picture, tried to take picture of one this morning on our feeder but because it was taken through glass didn't come out at all, looked the same as yours but without red on head and not quite so much pink, is it just males who have red on head ?

Hi Simbad, male Great Spotted Woodpeckers have red on nape and Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers have red on top of head. Females of both don't have red on head or nape.

Thanks for that, had a male on bird feeders several months ago, husband didn't believe me said 'keep taking the tablets love', he saw the female today though so had to believe me.
Getting quite into this birdwatching, have so many varieties considering we live in the centre of a busy town.
