Wildlife - Poplar Hawk Moth

This was on the wall of the house for a couple of days - about 2" long. Thanks to everyone who identified it.

Had a look on Google Cottagegardener, and it looks like a Poplar hawk moth.

A few of you experts identified this as a Poplar Hawk Moth

Also called 'lime' hawk moth, although I go for 'poplar'. I have seen them quite a few times here in the south, and I suspect may even be the commonest of the 'hawks' here. It would seem to have a choice of two food plants.
