We put nuts into the cracks in the post for the birds & squirrels. Dad is learning the baby how to pick them out.

Thanks all - it's surprising just how big the young are compared to the adults

This is a great shot ! But I'm gonna have to stick up for us men here - that's actually Dad in the photo. Mum doesn't have any red on her head. ;~)

Muddy - thanks you're quite right. I knew that the Greater Spotted Woodies had a red cap over the Lesser, but had not really paid attention to the difference between the males & females. Chances are that it mostly the males we have been seeing when it comes to feeding & learning the youngsters in that case. I've altered photo details accordingly - many thanks.

You're welcome. Sad to say they are an infrequent visitor to my garden, perhaps 4 or 5 times in this, my first year here. I do see/hear them fly over quite often and I feed the birds regularly so I'm optimistic. :~))

Muddy - have just loaded up a woodpecker collage for you - hope this keeps that optimism alive - it's just a matter of time - we have at least 2 regularly every day.
