Thanks Morgana / Simbad it is unusuall , it is about 6ft tall with several of these tall stems .. it does have to be cut down and then straw packed onto the crown to protect it in the winter ... :o)

Is it just the crown do you have to cover with fleece?

How long have you been growing this one Amy? I planted one this spring and it has made almost eight feet

Andrew I've been checking it's approx . 6years old it probably is nearer 8ft high than 6 ft. it's way over my head .. ... yours has done well since the spring .......

Morgana , we usually pack straw over all the growing parts that you can see a good thick layer and then pin chicken wire over it so that it dosn't move or get blown away ........ we then don't remove it in the spring untill the frosts have finished .......

Thanks Simbad , glad you like it !

It comes from Mexico so it needs full sun and a well drained soil. Mulch the roots with straw for winter - it will get cut to the ground but grow again next year. Not sure how it would stand a Yorkshire winter though but you could give it your most sunny sheltered spot and see what happens

Thanks Andrew :o)

Thank you Amy .. thanks for extra info Andrew expect you may have seen this on your recent travels then ..Being close to coast we tend to avoid sharp hard frosts so a real thick mulch would protect probably find it harder to get a sunny spot but does look a great plant .

Now all you have to do is track one down - it took me four years!

Easier to go to Mexico than find one in Yorkshire ...?

I bought mine at West Acre gardens nursery , in Norfok , it's one of those nurserys within the walls of the old West Acre hall grounds .. they often have specialist plant days ..... I've been checking the internet , they actually haven't to much info .about what plants they have , they have a Tel. no . 01760 755562

It does say they don't provide mail ordering !

It's about 25 miles from me , I don't think I will be passing that way in the near future , but next time we do go I will look to see if they have any in stock ...

I bought mine from the Museum of Garden History in Lambeth when they had a day with lots of small specialist nurseries there. Probably best to go to the RHS website and check on Plant Finder for suppliers
