I have posted a few other photos from this flower, Scadoxus multiflorus known as "Christmas Star" in Brazil. The picture was taken today 11/21/2009. This plant is in our family since ever, pertained to my grandmother. This year it brought me the happiness of 6 different bloomings, and I wanted to share with you all... an early Merry Christmas :o)))

Hey Milky my best wishes for your scadoxus (funny name for such an lovely flower)
Fernando my friend from Botany Garden was telling me how to spread it after summer...
I confess afraid to do it, but I need to and want to as well.
Would like to give one to each one of my children.

thank you Rkalyan,
these flowers are very important to me... they remind me my grandmother,
I almost can see that very short old lady over her flowers and plants... "time to move to the shadow... time to move to the sun... time to hide of the cold...."
the smells of my childhood are about gardenias, lillies, roses and fruits of course... :o)

Thank you Greenthumb,
If you have any tips about spreading the plant's bulbs, I'll appreciate it.

It does look like a bulb, so it should be clear when you unearth them, just separate the bulbs. Of course after flowering when green growth initiates.
If it is a rhizome, just cut the large root in half or in sections with a growing shoot on each. I'm guessing they don't go dormant there (dying back to the ground), so divide after flowering when its green growth initiates.

Thank you GT :o)
Well, I have to say that it is all green right now...and also it goes dormant after winter when the plant suffers with the cold... disappearing to come back again strong as you see in this photo
so, my next question is.. should i dare to spread it now, or wait till it goes dormant?

If it does go dormant, that should be a good time, no damage since the roots will have died back too. It might stress them doing it now, though many things are more resilient than we guess.

Thank you GT.
I'll wait until winter when it goes dormant to spread the bulbs.
