I presume this is the great spotted woodpecker. I believe the lesser ones are more rare. I would be glad if someone can confirm it for me please.

Yes it's the Great Spotted Woodpecker Gee , the photo in my BTO book is identical to yours ...... the male has the red patch on the back of the head . the female dosn't have it .....

Thanks for the id, Amy. I often hear them over by the pond among the trees and sometimes see them but this is the first visit to the garden that I am aware of :)

I'm really pleased for you Gee , I've only ever seen one in our garden that was ages ago .....
By the way my daughter and Granddaughter were over here yesterday and they both have a longing to get a nice Dolls house .. :o) .. it could be me looking for little bits in the future .......
