Sunken Garden

We kept hitting brick work in the grass with our mower..did some trial pits, just like Time Team, and found there had been an outbuilding there. So we excavated it (fun driving a digger, not so much fun hand digging the edges..) and found strange chambers either end, with arches through the walls, So I have kept these as features. It's a work in progress, probably will repair wals further and put coping on; thinking about planting iris in a couple of the mystery chambers..they are water filled quite a bit of the time.

How fascinating - wonder what it was? Love the idea of the iris growing in the chambers.

Interesting the arches reminds me of like the old bridges or fires, if it was a building more fire, not sure which are the water chambers, if its the ones at the back of the arch perhaps it might of been a farriers as I find it funny and I am linking this idea to your wife, as she like fires and that is what a farrier has fires, I do believe in life you are drawn to certain places with out knowing

Thank you for the feedback..I am a bit taken aback that You've all seen it already, and think its worth commenting on.. I'll add some detailed pictures, I would be very interested in any idea of what the chambers were. So far three theories..Parchment making (it was a local speciality) , bricks..(used as a fire) for the same reasons, and perhaps part of a complicated privy? Morgana, you must be prescient, the last use before the building was knocked down was as a blacksmiths/farriers..keep finding horseshoes..

And thank you for the welcome MIchaella.

Oh, forgot to say the raised galvanised steel beds will have more lavender hedges of Hidcote, already planted, and the trees in the one to the right are silver birch.. boy did they grow fast!
