Mystery chamber South

Mystery chamber South

This one I have excavated a little more..ground level is at the top of the wall, so the arch is under ground. It's usually got water in. There might have been another chamber next to it, but no arch.

What do you think it is?

There have been three theories put forward: Parchment making (Havant nearby is supposed to have provided the parchment for the Magna Carta and the Treaty of Versaille); a fire pit for pre heating bricks (there was a brick works nearby); or as a fancy privvy..my house outbuilding had an outside loo in the similar location...but all suggestions welcome!

Local historians may help Stevey?

Some sory of drainage channels....is it near your pond area?

29 Nov, 2009

The pond was dug only recently., and it had to be lined to hold water...the chambers are probably late 17th century.

Interesting. I wonder if they were for drainage.
Or an undergroung heating system for a greenhouse (?)

How exciting. Certainly stirs the imagination. You have a mystery at the bottom of the garden. LOL
You could turn them into bog gardens....plant them up with moisture loving plants.

They seem quite sophisticated to me? are the bricks dateable?

29 Nov, 2009

It's thought late 17th century. Yes, they obviously knew what they wanted when they built the building. I'm thinking of irises in bulk..purple ones, to go with the Lavender.

Oh, Hywel, I have a photograph of the building when it still stood, and it was a brick shed..no greenhouse I am afraid..

29 Nov, 2009

Yes Hywel........maybe the heating system....would it be hot water sent through....where from though?
Sorry to have to ask this Stevey.....they couldn't be anything to do with a midden..Lol!
Maybe they were under the floor of an ice house, those water channels would freeze keeping the house at a very low temperature.

Well, midden/privvy..one of the three theories..but I thought it was more earth closets then..

I think its a bathing area like a bathroom.
