Eucalyptus Flower.

Eucalyptus Flower. (Eucalyptus globulus (Blue Gum))

I went up the top of my garden this December morn, to discover my Eucalyptus tree had bloomed these beautiful, soft white flowers.

Thank you Bernieh. Yes the flowers are so like the Syzygium olesum.

Ah ... it's the Tasmanian Blue Gum - should have waited until you added the comment. Still beautiful though.

Yes it is a beautiful tree. Collared doves nest in the higher branches, and Coal tits in the lower. Sadly no koo aburas...

I like the smell Marguerite. It isn't too strong here. It will smell stronger in your country because you get the hot sun shine, which triggers the oils.I use the leaves for herbal tea, to help defend against colds. Yes it is a very vigorous grower, and I am just as puzzled as you are about it's winter flowering.I took a close look at the blossoms, and on the pollen are tiny black insects being busy.

Very pretty flowers...very delicate...

Thank you Amblealice. Yes Marguerite I would love to watch these flowers opening in time lapse sequence, seeing those delicate polyp type petals pushing the little cap open. I don't know what the insects they were, I just went up with the magnifying glass and they had all gone. It is growing dusk and cold now, so must have departed some time before.

Thank you Sanbaz. I did not know I had them till this morning. I think that they are my early chrissy present from mother nature.

Faerieflora - here's a snippet of information on your question from the International Society of Aboriculture - the Australian division:

Australia may be set to claim the world's oldest tree record, as two specimens of the world's rarest eucalypt, the Mongarlowe Mallee (Eucalyptus recurva), which grow 40 metres apart, may be part of the same original tree.
If so, they are estimated to be 13,000 years old!
If not, the individuals themselves may be 3,000 years old, making them Australia's oldest trees.
This is now an extremely rare and protected species.

Of course, bushfires and tree-felling by the first settlers wiped out many of what would be our oldest specimens.

Thank you Bernieh for taking time out to send me this information. I found it very interesting, which makes me appreciate, and admire the Eucalyptus even more. Ancient trees are truly magnificent. I think my tree is approx 20 years old. I purchased it when it was very little for £3.

beautiful pressie ..and interesting reading about the Eucalyptus..it certainly won't grow in our region..your garden must be very sheltered..

Thank you Deida, glad that you found the information, like me, interesting. I think that the tree grow so well because it does have a sunny, but sheltered position in the garden.
