Seriously, one cannot tell if it's a male or female until it blooms.(Phoenix is a dioecious genus) Female trees only produce fruit and are usually overall larger and a more beautiful tree.

im sexist ..lol most flowering plants i refere to as female and i cant see this one ever flowering but i dont mind i like it anyway.

LOL! You may be surprised. It takes quite a few years before Phoenix canariensis - Canary Island Date blooms...however, it's worth the wait.
These trees grow wild everywhere in California (except mountains)...they pop up in the cracks in the sidewalk and in the middle of asphalt. They are considered weeds here....I still love them anyway! : > )
