Wild Clematis and Manzanita

Wild Clematis and Manzanita

This wild clematis I found tangled in the manzanita for support, shooting up blooming vines into the bristlecone. It was quite a sight to see.

Its stunning Gt....looks like a Macropetala type?
No. more the Alpina...very similar to Clematis Alpina Frances Rivis.

Thank you for the comments. It was a real wonder, finding this wild. I puzzled it out, the leaves and vine revealed its identity more than anything. Alpina would be a good description, this is 9000ft in elevation and this is spring blooming. These were the finishing few end of June, just a week or so earlier and the whole area would be blooming I think.

Yes, it's lovely and the bark of the tree/shrub it's growing through is a lovely warm brown as well!

Thank you Karensusan63. This is a manzanita, they have such a nice rich brown wood. One of my favorites. A very slow growing hardwood found in southwest US.

mmm....reminds me of my arbutus, it has a lovely brown bark as well. I've never heard of manzanita but it's a lovely name...sounds mexican! My son is in San Diego at the moment, maybe he'll bring me one! ha ha!

Proabably is mexican. I believe it might be protected in California, but that is from wood harvesters, for the color. A nursery plant is probably available. They are beautiful. One of my favorite southwest plants. I'll post a few more shots of it so you can see a little more.
