what is the name of this plant love the color of it

Its name is over on the r-hand side, Pondlady - but just for you - it's a small shrub called Sorbus sorbaria 'Sem'. :-))

I have this - it's beautiful, first thing to break bud in my garden. It's very popular just now, pops up in garden centres all the time. It reminds me of a sumach in a way, the colour and the shape of the leaves. Mine hasn't quite got there yet, but if we had another sunny day I think it might come out!

This shrub is very special to me - a friend gave it to me as a memorial to my Mum...

Looks better than most flowers but how tall is it?

It only gets to 3' maximum, and it's about 2'6" now.

Yes, and it is very bushy - spreads out as far as it grows up doesn't it.

By the way, it makes a great host for a clematis! One of the low growing ones!

Well, the leaves turn out quite light when mature don't they? so I would go for a dark one. Perhaps Victor Hugo or Versailles....

I'll look out for those - thanks. I only have the taller species - haven't ever grown a low growing one. So why not? :-))

If you go to taylors clematis website, you can search for low growing clematis. There is a panel in the left hand of the page which allows you to search by colour, flowering period, height etc.

I don't know about sorbus freesiaP, but it reminds me a bit of a mini stags horn sumach. It also has a similar habit of sending out runners at the base which can be cut off and grown on. I used to have a stags horn in my old garden and it was beautiful, particularly in the autumn. Spreads out a lot though so you need a little bit of space, but only grows to about 3-4m I think - you might like to check it out. Kx

Hi Freesia - I looked in my tree book, and there's one called Sorbus aucuparia 'Beissneri'. The leaves sound lovely - young shoots dark coral-red, and the young leaves yellowish green, just like 'Sem'. The leaves are fern-like, too.

It might not be too difficult to find, either, as it's listed in the RHS 'Plantfinder' by a number of Nurseries.

That tree does sound rather a 'dish', wouldn't you agree? Wish I had space. My shoehorn doesn't work on trees. :-((

I know, i'm sitting here in my dr.gown with a gale howling around the house. Hardly slept last night for the din! Kept thinking the greenhouse will be gone by morning...it's fine! so, I'm having a gardening-on-the-computer day today. I was planning to go to Dundee Botanic Gardens and have lunch with a friend....boo! come back spring! Trees, I love them. I already have far too many in the garden so I really can't keep on planting them but I do tend to get carried away. I am not a great fan of permanent concrete, metal and brick in the garden and much prefer to do the vertical interest with plants!

That's exactly what's happening here, too. My bird feeders have all blown away, and the peanut one is smashed.

I'd love to plant that tree - but I push my luck craftily nibbling at the bed edges all the time - OH sometimes doesn't notice... I think he'd notice a new tree, don't you? LOL.

Mine would - because he cuts the grass! The mower would notice, anyway. LOL.

Ah yes, well, I now have a 'ladies' mower like annella so I can do that on the quiet when he's not here!! ;))
