Coastal Alaska Flats: Knik Basin

i have daisys on my lawn today so summer cant be far away.....how far is this from you?

Oh, daisies! Summer is surely on its way.

The south coasts are about 200 miles, thats just to cross the mountains. The other side is flat with the sharp volcanic chugiak shoving up along the sealine. Most looks like this, we have the flat swamp on this side, but they aren't this lush, too cold on this side.

Coast is 300, 200 to cross the mountains. These flats go for 100 miles more before the mountains at the ocean. I've always been deep inland. Only a few years spent on the south coast here.

I too have always lived within a few miles of the coast. It is about 20 minuits from here. I used to live closer.

Those here who have never seen the Ocean always amaze me...but there are many from the mid USA that have never smelt salt air...Salt air is the first that entered my lungs...gotta have it! But your inland areas do intrigue me GT. I always have to rush on my way back to the salty home air as I begin to crave it after I am away. lol :) I love the lushness in this picture..is this the area that has the monster mosquitos???

I love coastal areas, but the air is odd to me, and I always end up heading back inland. I am fascinated by mediteranean places like in Greece, where there it's more arid but still coastal. I haven't been anywhere like that.

If you want monster mosquitos, just come anywhere here. They come out first in May followed by smaller and faster varieties until it dries up in August. We are mainly this wet in the interior too, but tundra and spruce looks very different from this lush grass, sedge and shrubs. The mosquito stories are no myth. My first year we discussed them like an alien race coming to take us over, or maybe we could place a big glass over the whole area and bug bomb it....they can make you crazy over time. They say the caribou migration starts when they are so maddened by mosquitos that they start running until they reach the Hudson Bay in fall. Each will lose up to a pint of blood a day to the little beasts!

I wish I could find the salve I got in Tahiti...I was chewed badly by mosquito's there on one Island..I found a chemist/pharmacy when we got back to a bigger Island. It was a French chemist. They said " mostick bites?
I said "yes"...they were horrid blue bruised knots on my shins and calves. They hurt like mad. They asked if I wanted something to stop them biting , something for the bites or something for both...I said for both!..lol...They sold me one salve for both. It was called " Force 2 "...amazing stuff..it made the bites stop itching and they went away right away and the mosticks never bit again! I have never been able to find it since..I sure would like to have some around...that is for sure!

I'm blessed to have few here at my house. Some places have them very very badly. And they don't find me tasty, another blessing. I've heard of a lot of remedies, but one that stops the itch and stops the bite, that is really something.

Looks a wonderful place to visit, bet there are lots of different birds living here amongst this.

There is a great variety in summer Sixpence. They are mainly the long travelling migrators, some rare to all but here and South America where they winter. A welcome day when they all show up.

Bet its a sight to see sounds lovely.
