In the past, I've found that these hollow stems have been a winter home for some beneficial insects, including ladybirds, so always check before discarding.

Good point indeed David...i might leave them on for now...:>)....This is the second year for this clump Greenthumb....Im amazed myself that it survived the cold winter we had...:>)))

why did he recommend taking them off monty? mine have about the same growth but im gonna get my stakes and supports all in place tomorrow as im trying to get ahead this year

Hi Havoone...He said to remove the old flower sticks because they could harbour disease low down and when the foliage grows its easy to catch your hand on them when dead-heading....He said to cut them off as far down as possible....:>)
