I have another with silvery markings, the same name apart from 'Old Gold'. I think I prefer this one - not sure. lol.

This is very attractive, Spritz. Does it stay small?

26 Mar, 2010

Doesn't it look lovely and fresh? Really pretty :~))

Gee - it will spread slowly into a 'mat', but not invasively.

Flori - glad you like it! :-)

Have seen this one at a local GC, Spritz, and am going to get some soon. :-)

I can't imagine how it'll fit into your new 'theme', David - but it is a lovely little plant, isn't it!

Well, I went to the GC tthis afternoon, Spritz. They had 2 varieties of A. ferdinandi coburgii. One was this one, labelled simply "variegata", and the "Old Gold" was a definite gold and dark maroon variegated variety, just coming into bloom.

What else would a pirate search for? "Old Gold" on treasure ships sailing from the Spanish Main, or buried centuries ago, clues only given on ol' "treasure maps"? :-))) X

Ah-ha! I see now. Yes, the 'Variegata' is the other one I have, with the silvery leaves instead of gold. The flowers are pretty similar, though!

27 Mar, 2010

Yes, the flowers are almost the same, Spritz. I loved the name of "Old Gold" as the foliage I got is just like that! I now have 3 plants just about to bloom, so looking forward to next week or so! X

That's good. The ones I got were classed as 'alpines' and came in tiny pots, but a price to match - they'll soon grow. The 'Variegata' that I got last year is twice the size it was then. :-))

Surprising what they sell as alpines isn't it. Perhaps they think everyone has Wisley-sized rock gardens. Lovely plant tho

31 Mar, 2010

I fell for them straight away, Anotherg. Wow, YESS please! I'd love Wisley's rock gardens....unfortunately, not enough space.....:-((((

Ooh Aaaarrrr.....old gold......shiver me timbers! Very pretty plant too!

Did you see the other one, Karen? Check it out sometime. It's in my plant list. I'm not sure which I prefer.

1 Apr, 2010

Yes, I had a look and I prefer this one, it is 'softer'.

1 Apr, 2010

Not sure which one mine is ( must dig out my label box ) but it's been flowering since November :-))

What strikes me is how tidy it looks, Spritz - I've had two varieties of this in a garden for 4 years now, both ones you mention - each patch has spread more than two feet all round and I keep having to hack bits off it, plus it looks a bit untidy before it starts growing properly, I find.

I don't mind it spreading, Bamboo - as long as I 'can' hack bits off if I need to!:-)
