I wish I could give you a name, Mike - but they are known as 'shaded primroses/primulas'.

I've been fortunate to find them at the grocery store, of all places! I have bought a yellow and have been shocked to find that they will overwinter if they are protected from the wind and early spring cold after the snow melts! I'd have a garden full! The california ones are large and showy and do well in a woodland setting.

It still sits in it's little plastic pot on the windowsill awaiting warmer weather before I put it out to pasture! It doesn't like house conditions ...it lost most of it's buds and blossom...but has recovered and looks promising. will post a pic.
