One was never going to be enough, so ended up with the perfect pair of Cordylines just to balance it out. My birds have got matching High Rise Flats to nest in ha ha ha! The brown you can see, is the old spent flower heads. Trouble is, when they get this tall, it just isn't that easy to tidy them up, and I am only 5ft 3in! Help!!

Thanks Sandra, Tt and San. Yes, I have two smaller ones of these, one is in a pot, and they look pretty sorry for themselves I must admit! Am wondering if I cut those down in the trunk they may come back, but know it's been a really bad year for losing Cordylines thanks to the snow and frost we've had, and couldn't agree more, San, it really is the saddest sight! Think these two have got by because of their age, and pretty protected by the lee of the house, luckily, as just a bit too big to wrap protective fleece round!! lol :~)) I use to fleece wrap my Cordylines, but as the green ones are as tough as old boots, I stopped. Too many of these harsh Winters, and I think I will start doing it again, rather than risk losing more.

Oh, how lovely. Very very nice. I'm glad I have my own Cordyline Australis now.

Well to be honest Dd, that house you can see is split into two flats, that overlook our garden, so they get to appreciate the greenery, and not have to lift a finger to look after it, which keeps them very happy lol :~)) Glad you like them Tommy, my Cordyline picts especially for you as promised lol!!! :~))))x

Oh they will, Bb! It has been a tough year for Cordylines, this last Winter killed off quite a few, I am lucky that these are so well protected by this wall! I'm glad you like them, Tommy has 5 in her French garden~she is potty over them!

13 Jul, 2010
I know what a bad year it was for these, Cristina, and a lot of people lost theirs too. Am so sorry to hear that you had fatalities too over last Winter! :~((((

These are looking great Flori. I had a smaller one in our garden and the frost looked as though it had killed it. I chopped it down to a few inches above the soil and had new growth.... :-))

you say, you got a second Cordyline. Did you transplant it? Is it doing ok - has it been successful? as mine are getting yellow and brown a month and a half after transplanting (one is of similar size, the second half that size). Can anything be done to help them establish, I was wondering...

Hi Casper, I thought I had lost these last year as they died off completely and we had to cut them down, but life is returning to them now and though it will takes years to get back to this height, the regrowth is healthy.
As to transplanting, I didn't have much success when I tried as they don't seem to like being moved and they hate wet feet!
Don't give up though, they could still recover as long as the roots are ok. The die-back always looks awful, but they can surprise you..I wish you success my friend..

hi Floribunda, thank you for replying. Yes, I have read a few sad stories like this one and am getting worried.
The amount of watering that should be given is something that is also unclear to me. As the trees started to yellow (especially in this recent heatwave) some say water them loads. I am not sure, will this not do more harm to the roots and will they not start to rot?
I still water them and spray the leaves every evening though..

When I transplanted one of my Cordylines in a raised bed Casper, I watered it loads and it just collapsed so I am a little dubious of over-watering now. They are a New Zealand native and drought tolerant so can manage being a little dry. It might have to look worse before it gets better my friend. Leaving them where they have been originally planted might seem odd, but time after time I have seen them come back from the base..I can't promise that yours will recover, but it sounds like you are doing all you can to help it do so. Keep me updated my friend...Would advise googling Cordyline Australis in your search engine as you will find there are lots of info sites out there regarding this wonderful architectural plant. Hope this helps! xxxx
