Wow ! Toto, what a great photo. Looks like it was designed by British Aerospace. Never come across this before so had to Google for more info - apparently it's a pollinating insect and uses that long proboscis to reach nectar. This cracking shot goes straight to my favourites. :-))

Thank you Spritz and Wagger. I think they must be increasing in number as I usually spot maybe one or two each year but have seen three this year and it is only early April.

I saw one (or maybe two) of these in my garden yesterday but wasn't quick enough to get a photo. If I hadn't seen your photo I don't think I would have noticed :)

Thank you. As I said before there seem to be many more than usual about this year.

NOt seen one of these before Toto. Very interesting. Bit like the humming bird hawkmoth.....have I got that right Toto?

Yes Lindak but this is not a moth.

I had one in my garden too Toto, more recent than Early April. I looked it up. Oddly it breeds on bee larvae. I got my camera trained on it hovering. When I looked it wasn't in the picture. I would think it maybe has a limited life cycle. so we don't see it much. The hairs are very long, so is not as large as it appears (saw hover picture on the internet)
