Is it a SLR, because if so you just need to adjust the settings .... then bob's your uncle ;-)

no, its a point and shoot with menus to adjust the settings, but ive tried that but never seem to get the exposure right

Don't despair and don't give up, it's just a case of playing with it and finding the right combinations - it can take time if you're not a gadget-geek !!!
It took me quite some time to get to know mine !
