Dark red roses.

These have a wonderful scent.

Very well captured, so hard to photograph red roses, this is a healthy one.

Appearances can be deceptive, Dd. I nearly lost it last year. It was growing happily with a Clem. tangutica, and I decided it was time to tackle the Clem properly instead of 'snipping' at it as I had previously - tsk tsk.

The rose didn't like being on its own and sulked. It produced precisely ONE flower! This year it seems happier. The Clem. of course grew back, but has had the same treatment.

The top flower in the photo shows the actual colour!

It's an absolute stunner.

Thanks - I wish I knew its name.....

Absolutely stunning 10 out of 10 for this lovely rose!!

:-))))

I'll send you gold stars if you can name it, Karen!

It's name is beautiful Spritz.

2 Jun, 2010

Could it be Etoile De Hollande?

2 Jun, 2010

I'll check it out, Wagger. Thanks. :-))

.....I think that's a distinct possibility! :-)))

:-))) Hope you have lots of visitors this afternoon. Lovely weather for it!

soooooooooooooooooooo pretty

Thanks, all - it's over and went really well, so I can breathe now for a few days.

It was a really busy day but enjoyable, as well.

That rose isn't Etoile de Holland after all - a couple looked at it, and they compared it with theirs. They did mention another name wich I promptly forgot, naturally! lol.

Fabulous red...

Back to the books, Spritz. lol. Unknown roses are never easy, are they? They don't look any the worse for it though!!

5 Jun, 2010

I was so busy answering questions about other plants that the name they said went over my head...such a shame - they said they thought they had it in the garden!

Thanks, Motinot - it is a lovely rose, even if it's anonymous! lol.

lovely,like velvet

7 Jun, 2010

How about 'Reine des Violettes' or 'Tuscany Superb' ?

7 Jun, 2010

Thanks - I'll have a google - the names don't ring a bell, though.

7 Jun, 2010

Nice rose, Spritz - how tall is the bush. Quite intrigued by this because the foliage is a mid greyish green and not glossy, unusual for a red rose. If its fairly small, could be Madame Louis Laperriere, but if you're growing tangutica with it, I'd imagine its a bigger rose than that! Is it a a climber?

7 Jun, 2010

It is indeed, Bamboo. It isn't vigorous, though. It has reached the roof of the gazebo, but no further - so up to about 8'....

7 Jun, 2010

Well I can't find it in my old rose book, so probably its a newer variety - that burgundy red colour is really quite distinctive.

7 Jun, 2010

It can't be that new - it was here when we came, and well-established. So it's probably at least 10 years old, if not more.

7 Jun, 2010

Hmm, well I meant newer than my book, I suppose, which, come to think of it, is now pretty old, probably about 25 years old!

7 Jun, 2010

Ah, I see. That couple weren't even 'locals', so I can't ask them unfortunately.

7 Jun, 2010

lovely colour - glad your day went well.

I had hoped to come over but the grandson arrived a week early! I am glad you had good weather for it.

Barbara, I may have cracked it ! Is it Rosa 'Souvenir du Docteur Jamain' ? Take a look here - http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=http://www.crocus.co.uk/images/products2/PL/20/00/01/00/PL2000010020_card3_lg.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.crocus.co.uk/plants/_/roses/climber-rose/climbers/climbing-roses/rosa-souvenir-du-docteur-jamain/classid.2000010020/&usg=__7r-wE6gQxS72VW8Vhs3-yhfUXyI=&h=600&w=568&sz=203&hl=en&start=8&um=1&itbs=1&tbnid=Cw1nxfnMBCaQIM:&tbnh=135&tbnw=128&prev=/images%3Fq%3Drosa%2Bsouvenir%2Bdu%2Bdocteur%2Bjamain%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN%26rlz%3D1T4ACAW_en___GB378%26tbs%3Disch:1

Good grief - that's the longest link I've seen in my life ! Sorry about that !! :-)

7 Jun, 2010

Hmmmmm.....I think you're the closest, Muddy, but the 'Docteur ' seems to have more inner petals...not sure....It doesn't say if it's a scented one, does it, or did I miss that? I will look at other images though - it's the same colour and size, so it 'could' be. You are clever! Thanks. :-))

It really is the longest link ever! LOL. I wonder why that should be??

8 Jun, 2010

R'smum - how inconsiderate! LOL. Congratulations, though. Maybe next year? :-)))

8 Jun, 2010

What a coincidence - Souvenir du Docteur Jamain I'd never heard of before, and yet it was mentioned last week in my magazine as being a rose that tolerates light shade quite well - and now here it is again!

8 Jun, 2010

So what's your opinion, Bamboo? Is it a possible name do you think?

8 Jun, 2010

No, I don't think its that one - the colour's right, but the flower form is different, more floribunda than HT - yours has the typical HT pointy shape in the middle. It may well be a climbing form of an ordinary HT rose, is my guess.

8 Jun, 2010

Hmmm...no further forward, really. Shame. :-(((
