Wow thats a stunner lovely pattern what a shame about the early buds but at least you got one beauty.

Thanks everyone, just a shame about that one petal, noticed today its sending up another couple of scapes so hopefully they'll escape, just going outside now to check I've got all the affected buds on all the plants, or the grubs overwinter in the soil and next year will have them again.

I love these but never have any success with them. Do you think it's my clay soil or just not enough full sun for them?

They're not really fussy about soil Annella, mines quite heavy clay but do add some well rotted manure when I plant, they do prefer a sunny spot but will tolerate some shade, don't like to be planted too deeply, that can prevent them flowering, just level with where the roots join the leaves,but apart from that tough as old boots, go on have another go, so many gorgeous ones, I've just given in to temptation,again, and bought two more,oops :-))

I don't blame you! I might try the front garden next time :-))
