Good luck Homebird.
As I recall (it was ten years ago), we wrapped the steel bar after I'd bent it with PVC insulation tape tightly too to stop any rust staining on the Jasmine.

Use a good thickness of steel bar, about half an inch or so. Should last more than long enough for the jasmine to become self supporting. Also, we have some trellis, about three foot high, at the base to support the young shoots at the bottom until they become woody and trunk like.
