My cats

These are my cats, all sleeping on the bed. Please excuse the mess on the bed; it's hard to clean when they're all chilling out on it.

how lovely...beautiful cats

I'm amazed they all stay there together, don't any of them bicker and have their own space ? !
Do they have the run of the house and garden or do you confine them ?

I took this picture back in January and it was a really, really cold winter....that's why they're all snuggled together! They have the run of the house, of course, but they're indoor cats - it's way, way too dangerous to permit cats outside here. Predators include a gun-happy populace who WILL shoot cats (or dogs) that venture on to private property (yes, that happens here; I work for animal control & it's an all too common occurence). Non-human predators would be raptors, foxes, coyotes, bobcats, cougars passing through, loose dogs, rattlesnakes, the occasional alligator, etc., plus one of the world's most dangerous spiders (one got me last year & I have a big crater in my leg where the venom destroyed my flesh!). Furthermore - cats do a tremendous amount of damage to wildlife - the number 2 cause of bird extinctions, after habitat loss, is predation by cats. Very few animals survive a cat attack. We do have a lot of wildlife here so it would not exactly be ethical for me to permit my well-fed pets to roam around killing things for fun.

My god, with 'those' predators i think 'i'd' stay indoors too ;-)

any room for you?, my 3 rule bed space. Great photo thou.

I have actually been pushed off the bed once or twice during the night. They keep moving closer and closer to get prime spots and sometimes I'm forced to the edge. When the dogs are on the bed it's even worse.

Oh, Louise1, we can't forget wild hogs. Those things get to be hundreds and hundreds of pounds and are extremely aggressive. You'd be better off running into a bear (we have those too) than one of those. One of my neighbors did see several recently, but fortunately I haven't!

WOW!! lots of cats, they all look quite plump & healthy :-)

Lovely, my cats would not dream of getting that close to each other and I only have 3! they bicker like anything. Where I lived before my neighbour worked for the RSPCA and took all the old cats as no one wanted them, they all had things wrong with them but she loved everyone to bits. They kept very much to their own back garden and occasionaly came into mine (one even kept coming in the house and getting stuck under the floor boards!) Good luck to you they all look lovely ;-)

Wow, you have lots of cats!!!!

That's what happens when you work at a high-kill animal shelter, where as many as 100 cats have been euthanized in a single week. Everyone who works there just keeps bringing more cats and dogs home. You do get attached to them, and even though you know you can't save them all, there's always room for one more, it seems. I am at the limit of what I can afford to care for and so I have to turn away. We get as many out to rescue as we can, but rescues are having trouble taking animals from us because their adoptions have tanked along with the economy.

Good on you Lauram for saving all those beautiful kitties.

Well Done Laura...Id be the same wanting to save them all and give them a good home, Its very kind of you and theyre obviously quite content with you ... Id be scared of all the other beasties though lol

I told my daughter about this photo, but forgot where I had seen it, and she was so cross! Now I can tell her and get back into her good books again!
I think it is great that you have saved so many and they look so contented.

10 Aug, 2010

They're contented, all right - they eat better than I do.

12 Aug, 2010

WOWWWW Lauram, I didn't realise you had so many cats. I have tried to count them, am I right in counting 13. You are very kind to take them all in and they all look lovely and healthy and so contented. I love this photo so much, I have added it to my favourites list. Thanks for sharing this with us all. :o)))

There are more than that now - I am fostering 3 litters of kittens and two mama cats. The 3 kittens from the first litter are now ready to leave mom, but they're still too small to be spayed/neutered. There are 3 orphans who are almost ready to go, and the last 5 were just born last week. Normally we spay the pregnant mothers (I know that a lot of people hate the idea of aborting litters, but when hundreds of kittens are euthanized in Georgia every day, it's hard to justify adding more to the population), but I had a bad feeling about it and so we let her have her litter. Unfortunately they are all solid black which makes them very difficult to adopt out, but they'll be ready around Halloween time so I suppose we'll just have to hope for the best.

Great pic....Gone on to my favs.....I love black cats...:>)

17 Aug, 2010

Me, too, Moti - I hate it when people come to the shelter to adopt and their children want a black cat, and Mom or Dad says, "No, no black cats." It happens more often than you'd suspect. Black cats are affectionate and smart.

19 Aug, 2010

I agree with you Lauram. I had a lovely pure black cat some years ago. \we called him Sooty! he was gorgeous. The are usually Known as "Lucky Black Cats" arn't they?

21 Aug, 2010

Sounds like too much supersticion to me about black cats.......Your cats look lovely and healthy. I have one adopted cat from the CPL. She sleeps with me and is very affectionate. We are the third people to own her and we have had her for 6 years now.

22 Aug, 2010

I agree Linda, there's way too much superstition - generally, it ruins lives.
As for black cats .... i adore them, they're coats are so soft and silky ..... my little black cat Millie is the apple of my eye :-)))))

22 Aug, 2010

I love cats and I love this photo, Lauram. It is sad that cats are not neutered or spayed so the cat population can be kept lower...irresponsible owners! I don't think I could cope with so many cats (and kittens) in my home but it is nice to see all your cats snuggled down so nicely :)

I shouldn't really look at cat photos as we have not got a cat now. Our last cat we had for 19 yrs. before she got ill and had to be put to sleep. I miss not having a cat but now that we're retired we aren't too sure about taking on another.

You are doing such a good job in the shelter where you are working. I wonder did you manage to find adoptive homes for all the black kittens (you mentioned they'd be available for adoption near to Hallowe'en, which has just passed)?

11 Nov, 2010

I still have all of my kittens. Sadly only 2 of Sundae's 6 babies survived. I'm planning to get at least a few of the males neutered in the next couple of weeks then put them up for adoption. The 2 solid black ones will probably stay since nobody will want them.

11 Nov, 2010

You have a houseful for sure, Lauram :) You must get lots of cuddles with so many cats around...and I can't imagine what commotion there must be when it's feeding time! lol

11 Nov, 2010

Lauram, whatever makes you think nobody would want the all black ones ?????

11 Nov, 2010

no one ever wants the black ones, Louise.
Whistonlass, they sure keep me warm on winter nights! I usually just leave food out all the time for them otherwise I would never get any rest!

11 Nov, 2010

I would guess there is a lot of superstition in Georgia...thus the reticence to have a black cat? Would that be the reason, Lauram?

11 Nov, 2010

I think it's partly superstition & partly just because they don't stand out. Black dogs have the same problem - nothing wrong with them, but they just have low appeal to the superficial person.

11 Nov, 2010

I'm staggered.
What an awful thing.
