I'm very pleased with this border 'this' year. Last year it was the dullest wave of colour but i bought and planted to create 'this' :-))))
'This' year the dull area is the purple wave :-((((

They're both rudbeckias, Ba.
The nearest is R. Prairie Sun, the one further back is Goldsturm - both hardy here.
I doubt i'll go to Malvern this year, one reason being that i think it's too late in the year to be planting the goodies i'm bound to find :-/

No, I mean whatever you buy will be in containers so it doesn't matter when you plant your goodies, I'll be buying goodies and then when I put pics on, you'll wish you'd come too lol:-)

I've adopted a new policy though Ba, and i know a few others are going to too.

Because planting after the end of summer leaves too short a time for the plants roots to get down and established, it means that the past 2 colder winters have killed off those later planted items.
The very same plant, planted a month or two earlier survived with no trouble at all - in a equally comparable site.
So, i wouldn't buy even if i 'did' go :-/

I agree with you Louise, most of the late planted things last year didn't survive here either, so if I get anything I'm keeping them in the cold frame until the spring

Okay, so I keep them in pots, sheltered, but I'll still have goodies to show you, something very rare, very new, totally hardy, flowers all year and is amazingly beautiful. Then you'll be sorry you didn't come;-)))

I'm relying on you Ba to tell me what was there ..... and i'm looking forward to seeing what you get, too :-)))

Back to the above re autumn planting, do you mean you shouldn't ssplit or move plant in the wrong place at this time?? I've got loads to move:-)

Personally, i'm not going to split and move now but i 'would' just move something as long as i was able to take a very large rootball with it.
I've had quite a few casualties over the past 2 colder winters and they've all been where i've planted late or shifted a thing without a decent amount of soil/rootball.
I'm going to plant new and do the splitting and moving in the early spring now

What about roses? I'm expecting Mortimer Sackler (bare root) any time soon from David Austin, it's cost rather a lot when postage is included, do you think it would be better to pot it up and keep it sheltered? Also other small roses in wrong place and only planted out this early summer, should I leave them where they are 'til spring? :-)

Ahh, now roses i'd plant now and a bare root would be fine, i'd say.
I planted a bare root in the winter and it's hardiness is amazing !
The other roses should be fine too, especially if you can take a hefty rootball with them.

I should be able to manage a root ball as the soil is new top soil so also full of compost round roots:-)
