I was really lucky with these pics. Was already down on the lower terrace taking pics of roses when they arrived. They were other side of garden so I zoomed max. and hoped I wouldnt shake!

yes, doesnt it? What amazes me is how very big their eyes are, big as buttons!
I did so love trolling thru your blogs and pics of Conker and Truffles, especially the kitchen towel saga!! Chuckled all the way..and oh so innocent!
Dont we all know that look!!!

That's a brilliant picture :-)))))
Did you know the RSPB recommend you remove the mesh from the fatballs as the birds can get their feet and legs caught up in the fine fabric of them.
better to remove it and put the balls into the wire holder 'naked' !

I didnt know that but we had a sparrow caught yesterday which I rescued. B****y ungrateful tho, he pecked me fingers all the time! I had an argument with OH and this afternoon, he removed the nets! He is especially fond of long tailed tits and when I said they could get caught too, he took off like a rocket!!

LOVELY PHOTO. I wished the squirrels let me do the same. I have to cover my bird feeders with many layers of wire mesh and leave little holes for the birds to enter.
What time of the year has this photo been taken? It would be of great interest to many of us if members showed the time their photos are taken, because conditions very from one place to another.

took this early this afternoon, but we get long tailed tits all year around. Bullfinches too.

Tetrarch, you 'did' make me chuckle with the account of your ungrateful sparrow and then your OH zooming off like that !!!!!
It's true though, they DO get tangled legs and feet.
In January we had a gold finch whose leg/foot must have got tangled up .... the poor bird was trying to balance in the tree and on the feeder with one leg whilst the other useless leg dangled ..... it was so distressing to see
:-((((((((((((((((((((((((((
By the way, i'm v v envious of your regular long tailed tits and bullfinches :-/
We get green finches, gold finches, chaffinches, linnets, blackcaps and every tit except long tailed.
No sparrows here though.

Me envious of you too, only ever once saw black cap, never a linnet and tho we do get coal tits they are very shy, I often hear but dont see. Actually sparrows are beautifully marked birds..just the brown colour puts people off, but their backs are an intricately patterned chestnut in the sun and the white markings pristine..some of the males are quite snazzy with large black bibs..

I like sparrows :-)))
In the last garden we had house aswell as tree sparrows and it seemed very queer not to have either here.
The blackcaps are such lovely little birds, so too the linnets - i have a particular affection for 'them', they're so much smaller than the finches.
The blackcaps are here from about December to April and then i don't see them.
The coal tits are most visible in the winter too, the great tits are here year round (as are all the finches and linnets).
In the winter i have to be very careful with the robins, i have to place their food well away from these other birds because the robins are SO aggressive here, you can watch them dive-bomb all the rest :-((((((
Making sure their feed is away from the others is the only way the finches etc can feed properly.
By the way, i keep going back to look at this picture of yours !!!

I'm envious, they are such pretty birds, they visit here, but don't hang around :0(

They are cute arent they. They used to appear briefly at about 8am like clockwork, but we must be on their "rounds" now because they are here several times a day. The most we have had at one time is about a dozen, but this year we must have had a pair that nested nearby because during May they were here nearly all the time. Always know when they are around..they announce themselves vociforously!
And Louise you are VERY lucky to have tree sparrows..I spent ages watching the sparrows hoping one day to see some but no luck. I understand they are very "country" birds and despite all our lovely open outlook we are only 2 miles from the centre of Bristol

I love these little darlings. They are so active and we get them in the late Autumn, We have just started having the Dunnocks visiting the garden again. The garden has been a bit void for the last few weeks then this last week the birds are coming in

I'll start looking out for the Dunnocks that come here :-)
