Yes I love this combination. Verbena bonariensis which has a similar colour to the flowers of this penstemmon looks well as a backdrop to rudbeckia. I've planted it that way in several of my customers gardens.

The verbena has seeded itself all over my garden and they are tough cookies! There's a country estate nearby and they have a garden of box shapes planted with Bidens and the Verbena....another good combination.....:o)

Yes it initially happened accidently for me with a verbena bonariensis self seeding behind a rudbeckia. I liked the effect and I've copied it in other gardens I maintain. The penstemmon and rudbeckia mix is quite similar.

I will try the verbena bonariensis with my rudbeckia, love them both.
