Sandra:

I really didn't think bananas would fruit there...because they need a long frost-free period to bloom and also 3 - 5 months to ripen the bananas.

Meanie:

Mysore is my favorite banana...it's very productive and has the best tasting sweet lady-finger bananas I've ever tasted.

It's a big commercial banana crop in India.

Sandra:

I know the optimum temps for ripening bananas are between: hi:85F/29C - Low: 70F/21C. ...but with that being said - I've had bananas ripen in winter here and they tasted very sweet. Actually, technically bananas don't ripen on the plant...the whole bunch is cut when the first banana looks very light yellow.

my dad was a dock worker in Newport Gwent. one of the regular shipment was bananas which were green on arival. there were huge ripening sheds on the dockside, he took us there once or twice. he used to bring some home and we would have to wait till they ripened...

Sandra:

I bet it was quite a sight...especially the first time.

I know the commercial plantations in Central America cut the banana stalks when they're completely green. This is because if they were picked when slightly yellow all the bananas will ripen very quickly.

Sandra - I bet those shed s were full of "exotic" spiders too! They used the vaults under the covered market in Oxford for storing bananas for a while, and had somebody specifically assigned to pest control, including removal of the "exotic" spiders!

dad used to tell us about the spiders .....but occasionaly he would bring us a small lizard...poor things never lived long...:-(

I'm sure there were snakes also. It used to be very common years ago to have all pests transported with bananas. Now they're pretty strictly checked/regulated -- although I'm sure now and then something gets through. Pretty scary!
