Tugbrethil:
The leaves are much, much larger and the tree grows to 150 ft/ 46 meters tall (about half that size in CA) in the tropics and develops buttresses. It's also extremely fast growing; to 30 feet/ 10 meters in 3 years.

It develops buttresses? Wow...it's gorgeous.. gotta love it! With that rate of growth I can't imagine that they will keep it in its' present position for too long!

Lori:
Yes, this tree develops buttresses! I've seen some of the older trees here starting to buttress. However, this tree hasn't been growing in California or a long time...maybe 30 years...and has only become really popular (and widely available) in the past 15 - 20 years.
This tree is in a pretty small planter....although, they can be trimmed and kept smaller.

It would be nice to see it in all it's unrestrained glory though, wouldn't it? Imagine looking up the trunk into the bowl of those lacy leaves! magnificent!

Lori:
I posted some large trees at the San Diego Zoo...however, they are around 50 feet/ 16 meters tall...and not sure how old they are though.
