I don't know if the one in Sacramento in the largest in the state. There's so many very old ones in Southern California.
This is a very hardy tree. There's one in Washington DC Capital grounds.
It was very unfortunate as this tree was cut down last year. It was most likely about 55 years old.

I wouldn't doubt that some are huge in souca. But,"officially" in the state registry of largest California trees the one growing on the grounds of Capital park is listed as biggest. Hey,for awhile Hayward had the largest Cook pine(?) in the state growing at the cemetery off of Mission blvd. For years. Then some San Diego tree was found to be bigger. Our claim for fame thwarted.

I can almost bet there's larger E. crista-gallii here in San Diego than in Sacramento. They just are not documented.
I've seen that Cook Pine for many years. It was the largest one I ever knew of...I have seen some here; however, not as tall as the one at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.

Did you know the largest in the state is in ...Sacramento?! How it avoids being cut back by freezes is amazing.
