Helen ... yes this is my avatar photo. It's native to my part of Oz and grows out in the bushland. It's not something you can buy at a nursery.
Drc ... the flowers open up in the early evening and drop by the next morning!!! Unless you know about this shrub, you would miss the flowers altogether. This year, after the rather wet 'dry' season we've had, all the Cocky Apples have been flowering quite madly.

Lol, Drc! That creates such a funny image in my head! I think the snakes, possums, dingo howls and other creepy crawlies out there in the bush would certainly produce a few twitching twitchers!

It is quite a rare flower as the area where this shrub is native is quite small ... given the dimensions of our great country. It's amazing to me that I lived in the city for around 25 years and never knew about these beauties until I moved out here closer to the bush!

I hadnt realized you moved from the city Bernieh must have been quite a testing time? What was the main difference you had to overcome?
I am curious about its name 'cocky apple' does it fruit?

Drc ... we're not that far from the city really, around 25 or 39 kilometres, but it certainly feels like a world away. The city is nestled on flat land close to the coastline, while we are in the foothills of the surrounding ranges and in the middle of the bush.

Probably the most 'testing' time was the adjustment my hubbie had to make because of the distance from his local watering hole! Of course he's found a new one out here! We have to travel a little bit to get to shopping centres, doctors, work etc., but it's not something that's makes us regret moving out here.

As for 'Cocky Apple' - yes these shrubs do fruit. The fruit looks a bit like a little apple and the cockatoos love them. So that's how they got that common name.

I think one makes more effort to get organised and socialise if its not all 'in your Lap' Bernieth? We live in a rural area and things are further away but I enjoy the peace and quiet but not on your scale though.

I know exactly what you mean, Drc. We make sure we do as much as possible when we're in the city ... big grocery buys and important errands all at the same time ... so we don't have to leave our home too often. It's a very relaxing and comfy place to be! I think I'll have to be dragged out of here kicking and screaming if the day comes when I need to move back closer to the city!!
