Allotment Green manure 2010-11-23

This is growing well, and so nice to see green where there would, perhaps, have been only bare soil, otherwise.

That, in part, was my intention! I would have liked to repeat it on the rest of the plots but I can't get hold of more seed & anyway it's too late in the year.

Looks good Balcony. What did you use? Most people over here use Rye.

Surprisingly there seem to be very few weeds amongst it! I've used White Mustard. This is the first time I have ever used Green Manure or grown Mustard. I got a packet of seed from a shop which was supposed to be sufficient for 25 square metres but the area I've sown is nowhere near that area. I sowed 3/4 of the packet on this plot & the rest on another plot.

I'll post a photo from time to time so we can keep up with their progress.

Excellent Balcony. That's going to make a big difference come growing season next year. Keep us posted. :o)

I hope it will make a difference, too! At least it will protect the soil over the winter & bring up nutrients to the surface where they will be more readily available for our crops! No idea what we will plant there next year, certainly not potatoes as it's the bed where the tomatoes grew.
