How long the mill has been in operation I don't really know. I would guess it has been working on and off since Victoria was on the throne. It is open to the public during the summer. The island I am on is called Mainland it is the largest island in the group and it is where the city of Kirkwall stands. I don't know the population numbers, but it is the most populated island in the Orkneys. There are enough people here to have company when you want it, but at the same time you can have as much solitude as you like. A lot of folk are moving here mainly from England. some go back after thier first winter, but most stay. I think 2 or 3 people work thier through the summer and Autumn
