Garden Put to Bed

Garden Put to Bed

All my beds cleaned up after the killing frost and covered in straw to help insulate before and after snow cover. This method is seldom used here due to all the shrews that live in the straw, but with my Bianca around I don't have a rodent problem and things come through fine.

It looks like a lot of hard work but I am sore you are up to it.

Great idea!

Yes, that must make quite a difference to your plant's ability to get through the winter. The farmers around our houses have done this this year too. Covered whole fields with staw. They obviously knew what was coming!

You've been busy. Nice to think of all those little plants snuggled down safe and warm :)

Thank you all. :-) I love uncovering them in spring. The bergenia and the dianthus stand up within a day and look like winter never came. Really an effective method against hard frosts. I have success with species for years that my neighbor has never had live one winter. Really helpful for the roses too.

A light mix mulch is best, straw and hay can be seedy. I'm am afraid I introduced Balsam Poplar with this bunch of hay. I'll have to nip at that for the next few years....lol.
