Cyclamen and Alyssum at Seaport Village, San Diego, CA.

Cyclamen and Alyssum at Seaport Village, San Diego, CA. (Cyclamen and Alyssum)

I love Cyclamen, however, it can sometimes be difficult to grow in San Diego. It doesn't seem to like our warm to hot and very dry weather in winter. Photo taken on Feb. 12, 2011.

Thanks! I really liked this Cyclamen display, too! I wish I could get some to grow in my yard. :>)

They look like the big ones, perhaps you could try growing the smaller ones which survive better over here outside.

Sixpence:

The reason why they don't do well in my garden is: because it's too warm and dry. These plants were growing right by San Diego Bay where the temps tend to be a little cooler, with more humidity.

Oh I see now yes these are winter flowers over here but sever frost will kill the big flowering ones off here the little ones survive better.

Sixpence:

Yes, Cyclamen like it on the cool side. They don't particularly like 80F/27C plus temps with low humidity...like we get during Santa Ana Wind season (fall -early spring). The day I took this pic it was 80F/27C., luckily they were growing on the north side of a restaurant.

Very English! :>) They're not the easiest plants to grow here...and they can be very expensive also.
