I came upon this wonderful pond/mini lake today. Bullrushes and elephant grass! And wild duck.

I have been looking up how to build a natural pond but they all need liners!

Are they expensive ? would look nice :)

Apparently and good quality clay is the best. Cheaper than a liner, lasts longer but has to be layed very well. Good for a smallish pond area......

I have done a bog garden for water loving plants packed the compost and heavy soil full of vermiculite to hold water

Has it worked Paul, holding all the water they need?

Please come and take as much of my clay as you would like, Lulu!! The only thing I ask is that you replace it with lovely ferfile, friable soil :)
This pond does look lovely, bullrushes always fascinate me.

Lol Gee!! Our soil is full of limestone!! Can you actually make a pond out of your clay?

I don't really know, Lulu! It is very heavy brown/red clay about 6 inches down and water sits on the surface when there is heavy or prolonged rain. In dry weather it bakes hard and cracks and is impossible to work. I understand that before the properties were built in the mid 1950's there were natural ponds here.

It seems to be doing okay Lulu - I put in Ligularia - horsetail and a purple one - need to find out that name :) and a little grass too

No, I don't have a pond, Lulu, my garden has flooded several times so it would have to be a raised one and I just don't need the extra work now :)

Just have a big pond in your garden!!!! I would quite like that but then there is a drought and the pond dries up!! I went back there today, it really is a magical place but I suppose only when it's raained alot and maybe there is some clay in the ground. We have a bit of clay in parts of the garden, it's all very hit and miss. I was about to invest in a Witch hazel today and luckily was told that they don't like lime soil and at 30-40 quid a tree.......!!

I think I'll just make do with the village pond over the fence, Lulu. Wow, that is some price to pay - how big was the tree?

About 2 foot Gee! And if i had a pond over the fence, I think I would make do too!
