At the GC this afternoon and bought a Smbucus Sutherland Gold, they grew very large and fast here.

My book says that Sutherland Gold scorches in sun - did you know that? I have this one in shade most of the day and it thrives there.

I do now, read the label after I had planted it!! lol it is not coming out now, it took long enough to manoever it in to the right position, will have to see how it goes.

Oh no....Ah - I have an idea. Plant something else in between your Sambucus and the sun - failing that, add a parasol! ;~}}

Just looked it up online and it says for full sun or semi-shade!! so will be keeping my fingers crossed, it is to grow large enough to cover an unsightly fence, you are lucky not to have these problems the curse of small gardens.....

As we don't often get HOT sun, I think it'll probably be OK, Dd, but I have my fingers crossed too. I'm sure you'll enjoy it anyway - mine is lovely, tho' it's slightly different in leaf colour, I realise. It'll do the job for your purpose.

It is to go in the same border as our very dark one Nigra? which is now well over 8 ft.....

My 'Nigra' isn't doing at all well - I'm wondering whether to cut it hard back and see if that helps.

This is gorgeous . . a new one to me: added to my wish list.

I'd say if you have room, go for it, Sheila. It's a lovely shrub, and likes sun or shade. :-)

Thanks Barbara - I've added it to my favourites so that I don't forget!
