My large Purple Firespike has several flower spikes...and is starting to bloom now. Photo taken March24, 2011.

You most likely had Odontonema strictum - Red Firespike. They are very common here also.

Odontonema callistachyum has become very popular in the last 5 - 7 years. I purchased my first plant in Los Angeles at a specialty nursery 16 years ago, when it wasn't common. I left my original plant at my last house...however, gave my former neighbor some cuttings. The posted plant is from my former neighbor who gave one back to me. This is the reason why I give many cuttings of my plants away...so if I need some cuttings back I know where to go. lol! :>)
