Busy Lizzies just planted in wall pouches 28-04-2011

I've just planted these 20 Busy Lizzies in new wall pouches on my balcony. 20 plugs for £3.

Ooh, good value there.

Glad you agree! Today I went to Tesco to get some more but they haven't got any! I can get them in other shops in town but they are more expensive.

how are they doing now? I could never get on with vertical planters such as this, i was always worried that the bottom ones would get drowned

It's just the opposite in fact! The bottom ones don't seem to get enough water! I try to make sure the water gets to the bottom & so I snipped off a tiny bit of the bottom corners so that when water came out of them, but not the compost, I knew I had watered enough.

I'll upload a much more recent photo so you can see just how they have come on the last 2 months.

I have "self-watering" plant pots, but the round ones don't have a slot to fill the reservoir, so I bought some transparent tubing and have cut it into sections to make sure the water goes down to the bottom.

Would something like that be any use? maybe with puncures along its length to let water out at various levels?

Thanks for the idea but I have some sections of plastic pipe cut to size & with many holes drilled along their length, I don't know why I didn't put them in this year.

Just remembered, it was because they were so packed with dried compost I couldn't get it out when I was planting up these pouches this year!

grins, I forgot to put the pipe in the pot before i started to put the compost in; I dug down and tried to push the tube down while keeping a figner over the hole; hope any that got in will wash out eventually. hope I remember next time!

That's how my pipes came to be filled with compost! A previous year, I've been using these pouches, although these are new this year, for at least 8 years!
