Something similar happened with one of mine :( Not sure whether it was wind or mollusc, but the severed head was found lying on the floor :( Interesting thought about the vaseline though...

make yourself a toadhouse, Sticki... if you have a broken terra cotta pot...that's roughly broken in half..place in like a minitunnel on the soil in a nice sheltered spot...toads like to rest in there while out and about eating slugs, mosquitoes, and midges...then you have the slug problem taken care of and can watch a happy toad go about his business...toads like a nice garden and aren't as demanding of water as frogs are...mind you, a nice pond really completes the garden. Toads mate and lay their eggs in water as well...had a lovely lady toad in my last garden pond who trilled long into the night...when she laid her eggs the goldfish had a feast! sad...
