This took a long while to flower Dd approx 5/6 years , we decided to get tough with it and gave it a really hard prune it did the trick and has flowered ever since , it is healthy Sandra usually the dove makes a nest in it , they haven't so far this year , thanks Carole we had one the other side but the ants undermined it killing it , probably just as well I don't think we could have coped with two ......

Yes I know the feeling Amy with all the trees next door to me Amy even the flowers the bits gets upstairs if you have the window s open

What a stunning example. At least a got a couple of flowers for the first time this year but then those awful weeds we had last week broke it from its support, John has sorted it though.
Amy: Do the older ones flower before they leaf - I notice yours has leaves and flowers at the same time, as did mine but some are just flowers and no leaves.

Dawn you can see the flowers coming before the leaf but then the leaves very quickly follow after .. .. I'm not sure about the flowers and no leaves , at least you had the flowers this year it will probably be fine next year :o) Thanks Janey ......

Dawn they need pruning in February when they have all those long new tendrils growing as well as August ....

hi amy, your wisteria caught my eye... i've asked the master gardeners here in arizona, the radio garden guy, people at the nursuries, and everybody in between & gotten as many answers. my wisteria is over 15 yrs old & has never bloomed. mostly i'm told nobody knows why; other than that i was told to fertilize heavily. i see above that you said you pruned heavily once and that made it flower. since then you prune twice a year in feb & aug, is that right? i've never really pruned mine except for stray ends that get too far out and catch on things they shouldn't; that could be the answer. should i try it?

Hi Noah , yes you need to prune your Wisteria badly if you never have done it , it's to late for this year , but you can cut all the long trailing wispy bits off as short as you like now ... in February you must prune all the side shoots down to 2" it will soon sprout out new growth ..and then again in July / Aug prune each stem down to 6" in between you can still cut of all the long trailing bits ... hopefully that will do the trick I would love to know if it works it might not for the first year let me know if it's successful .. by the way we have never fertilized ours maybe we should but we never have

does wisteria flower on old wood or new growth? that would affect when to prune, right? february is pre-spring for you, isn't it? the equivalent in our climate is probably october; that's when we seed for spring flowers. by february here, it's usually starting to leaf out; what do you think? at any rate, whenever i prune, it's not blooming so far, so it shouldn't hurt. i'm getting out the loppers! thanks for the info; i'll let you know if i have any luck...

Funny you should say that because I was thinking the same thing with your seasons coming in different months Noah ..the Wistera flowers on the new growth , I think you should do it now ~~ be brave , it sounds harsh to prune so much off but it is the right thing to do , when you have finished it should be one long stem with lots of 2" mini branches all the way along the length of it and nothing else .. lucky you to be looking forward to Spring :o) please let me know how you get on !
