Trachycarpus fortunei (trachycarpus fortunei)

Taken yesterday at Oxfords botanic gardens.
This is in bloom at the moment, although the flowers are not anything to write home about!

And hardy too!
I saw one of a similar size in a specialist nursery a few weeks ago - yours for a mere £1750.00!!

a mere snip then lol :-) ... mind you that's a lot of plant there..

And like this one, they were all grown outdoors so no issues as to hardiness.

Yep, that,s a beauty alright, at least twice the size of mine, but there again I only paid £60 for it about 7 years ago lol, but 1 of the virtues of being a gardener is that you learn patience!!!, but Iwould like to see mine like that before I get to that big garden in the sky

Patience! Seven years for me too, with my Strelitziz without a flower!

Just a thought Meanie, do you keep the strelitzia potbound as that's the best way to get them to flower, to much space and they just leaf up..

13 May, 2011

It was until ten days ago! I had to cut the pot off.
It is splitting, not producing a flower (good call there SL!), so as the days are getting longer I've decided what the heck, I can wait another year!

13 May, 2011

true it is worth the wait, looking forward to mine now it's only 7 months old lol..

Meanie:

Nice little Trachycarpus fortunei! It will eventually grow to 50ft/16m tall...like they do here in CA.

That may well be the death of it if it outgrows this sheltered spot!

This is an interesting website on Trachycarpus fortunei growing in the UK.

Nice palm and it is said to be very hardy. The winters are too cold for me to grow it outdoors but it does well as a houseplant. Thanks for sharing, that's the biggest one I have ever seen.
