look what I found growing near the forest....

the slugs were enjoying them...guess I know why the neighbours pigs were so attracted to the lawn!

Lori, is that a truffle? I seem to remember my mom going out in our woods and picking something very similar. My dad would have kittens thinking she would poison herself but being a country girl most of her life she knew what to look for.

Of course my memory is probably flawed about what they actually looked like as it's so many years ago now! Maybe you mean the pigs were interested in the slugs? lol

Fascinating growth. Edible or not? Please dont try it on my behalf if your not sure though Lori. Would hate to lose a valued Goyper! LOL

Now that is an expensive plate of food......lol

It's a morell I think! Most are edible but one is not!! We found them a few years ago growing in the mulsh of the studs rosebed. We googled it....it was ok!

LOL...Whistonlass: as an after-thought I went out and had a look where the pigs had been digging...This is a morell and they are supposedly quite delicious. Thought that perhaps there were truffles if the pigs were interested..but you know pigs, aye, they only eat the best!!? Lulu33..Good eye! The slugs have been enjoying this one~ so I won't be eating it! I sent a picture to an expert...he's on an extended photo tour of the far east (photographing fungii) so I won't be hearing any time soon! Not to worry, Bampy...the only mushrooms I trust are the ones from the grocery store!
Milky: They are very expensive to buy. and the gastronomes really make a fuss about them, but in parts of the US they are considered famine food.

Lori...I'll not lose any sleep then worrying that you have consumed a poisonous fungi as you say you only eat them if they are bought at the store!

You have to be so careful taking produce from the wilds and be very sure of what you are eating that's for sure.

Not to worry, Whistonlass....I need more time to fully check out everything that's growing here...but now that I know where they are..I'll be interested to see if more appear.

LOL...oh Lori, when I saw the thumbnail of this photo, I thought it was some kind of delicious dessert with a caramel topping.

lol... thanks Gilli. I wasn't tempted...it had snail slime on it...just wanted to confirm that it was a morell and that it was safe! have found some more growing but something strange is happening to them...they are becoming black and blighted looking on the top...so I'm waiting for the expert to get back to me.
Adoons: wouldn't you know it?...I get there after the slugs!

28 May, 2011

Uggggghhhhh!! Snail slime!!....I wouldn't have been tempted either.
Would the blackening just be that they are aging??

I think you are right, Gilli. or perhaps they were exposed to direct sunlight? (Strange as that may seem, given we've not seen much of it for a month or so!) Is it possible for a fungus to have a fungus? lol...

29 May, 2011

Hmmmm....a fungus squared! LOL

Hi Sandra... yes it's gone by waaay too fast. Hope things are well in Pembrokeshire...How is your pumpkin doing...championship size yet?

18 Sep, 2011

wet and windy has been the norm here for a while...:-(

not expecting much from the pumpkin...maybe twenty pound with a bit of encouragement..hows your summer been? and did u finish the greenhouse?

18 Sep, 2011

Oh yes... the greenhouse is up. won't be heating it tho...would cost a fortune. Next spring I plan to make good use of it tho... Our summer was a story in contrasts...the spring was late and cold and very wet...the early part of summer was buggy and muggy...the high summer was hot as hades with some serious storms...but late summer has been hot and dry...took a walk up into the bush and was surprised that the ground litter is very crisp and dusty...we've had rain but it hasn't been enough to wet the understory. We had some rain about a week ago and it was blowing in...and starting gradually...and it seemed like everything was leaning toward it calling it to come and ease the dryness. Terry and I were standing on the back deck and we could hear the little tree frogs..chirp chirp chirping like the robins heralding the long awaited moisture! it was sooo cool.
