I enquired about this plant today in two local garden centres. The first one said they were due in next week (saying nothing about them being tender) and the second one said they would not grow outdoors here in the North East even in the mildest of winters as it's too cold. I'm confused, I thought they could be left outdoors.

hi shelia ............ its out side on top bank , proteted on the fence in sunny positiuon ............. the name is above on one of the coments so you know it the plant you want !! loses its leaves in winter , i dont flease it . we live in the north ! does that help ..............

Sorry but you don't live as far north as me. We're in Sunderland which is right up on the north east coast (near Newcastle) and only about 80 miles from Scotland, so I think it's probably a lot colder here than it is in Cheshire. Apparently it's common name is Chinese Goosberry!
