Our shell is very old so it looks a little care worn...

Oh, nice! how much soil did you actually use? I usually worry about crowding plants too closely or in not enough soil, which is my pots end up too big and with only one plant in!

...yes, I do that too Fran...either that, or the extreme opposite! I can never make my mind up which is the lesser of two evils! :)

lol I shoved my petunias in at about 14 per trough, mainly in the hope that the less soil that was exposed, the less likely it was to be dug up! But now I'm wondering whether I should spread them out a bit.

Well that's the great thing about annuals isn't it...they are usually fairly easy to move if need be! Go on, spread em out, give em room to breathe! You'll not regret it! :))

And do it while the weather is damp, less likely to lose them.....

Saves a lot of watering Fran. I moved a hydrangea that was suffering from the drought tonight.

I've put all my self-watering planters that aren't yet used out to catch as much rainwater as possible - it started raining about ten minues after I'd watered the plants around 7.30 pm, and it's now 1250 "tomorrow" and it's still coming down.

It has turned in to April here with a touch of March winds, crazy weather.....welcome rain though.

nods, so long as it's not taken to excessive levels! i have some plants in a tray, on gravel; when I looked after about a week of rain, they were standing in about two inches of water, called for some quick baling out.
I put wicks in the bottom of all pots, and am trying to work a system where they can all get as much water as they need without being drowned; not quite got it right yet.

How clever of you.......still tipping it down.
