Sweet little faces.

All my plants are so tentatively placed...will be moving these to a bed that is closer to the house and mulching them for winter, even though they would survive without it.

Thanks D1. Can't praise these little flowers enough. They are very prolific seeders too. No need to save the seed and plant it...they will do it all for you...just have to be careful to recognize the plants when they are first starting so they don't fall prey to weeding. Have found more of them in two other garden beds...great!

Wow! These grow wild there?

Yes, this var. of viola will survive and reseed itself for many years. You plant them once and you will have them for at least three years afterward. They like to reseed in walkways though.. I repopulated a whole bed with seedlings that were coming up in my pea-gravel pathway in my last front garden! The seed pods are three sided and when they ripen they Pop! sending seed in all directions..very prolific seeders. There is a var. called Johnny Jump Ups...which are wild...or naturalized..flowers. The blossoms are edible and are often used in salads for colour!

Lovely to find. I had eight different colors this year, all back from years prior, I didn't plant even one this year. Its been wonderful. Even the giant pansies have reseeded.

find that very rewarding too. they just confirm your good judgement in planting them in the first place! I had a large area of the true violas in my last garden...a var. called "freckles"...that spread and created a great show in the spring.
