Would you believe....I met a family last night at a party. They had rescued a baby Goldfinch whose nest had been ransacked by magpies. They have had it a week, fed it, nurtured it! It's now eating Niger seeds and has learnt how to fly! They will leave a window open for it so when it feels ready to go it will! It was in there car and offered to show me but being night time I didn't want to disturb it. How wonderful is that! They had to feed the wee thing every hour!

Oh, thats so sweet. glad they saved it, I hate magpies.

Am a bit worried about the ones we have here! When those babies start to chirp pee cheep cheep! Oh Lord, I can see myself up every hour too!

Oh I know, it's a poisoned chalice, a birds nest isn't it. I'm quite glad the bluetits didn't bother with us this year and thank goodness the house martins have learned their lesson. Their 'cement' just won't cling to our harling once the birds hatch...too heavy. After two successive years of dead hatchlings on my lawn, I am hugely relieved!!

On a positive note....the Swallows are nesting everywhere!

Great pic! I never get fincehs in my garden ever :( I put out niger seed too but the damn pigeons came and ate everything..I shoo them away but I cant stand out there in my jammies all day long shooing pigeons!

Pixi, you need a niger seed feeder, then the pidgeons wouldn't get to the seed. Mind you, those goldfinches are messy b*****s. They chuck the niger seed all over the floor and then you end up with the pidgeons again! I get a whole flock of goldfinches in the winter...I've counted about 30 at once. They are funny because they are always scrapping over the seed! They don't come in the summer, they go off to the fields. Mostly sparrows and blackbirds at the moment.

Well I had a niger see feeder..none came :(
Oh well I love the bluetits tho have two pairs who come regularly. Im listening to the backbirds saying night night now..so nice that sound isint it
