Many of Markhamia seeds are germinating now. I planted the seeds on June 22, 2011. Photo taken July 17, 2011.

Palamate:
They will eventually grow to a tree of more than 40ft/12m tall. I have one large tree which is blooming now (this is where I got my seeds). I have several other seedlings which I just posted last week (which are going to be sold).
Here's my seedlings:

Alexandramou:
Thanks!
Your seeds should germinate pretty quickly. :>)

Delonix,
I went and bought new potting soil this evening....tomorrow is sowing time. I can't believe I waited so long.....soooooo unlike me.

With all the heat you've had there, the seeds should germinate quickly. They germinate very quickly in hot weather here, also.
19 Jul, 2011
Do you cover them with clear plastic?
19 Jul, 2011
No. I just put them into the sun and water the seeds frequently (keeping the soil constantly moist but not soggy).
Last year I started the seeds in my pop-up greenhouse. However, last winter the roof ripped off...and I haven't fixed it yet.

Seeds are sown...
Now I wait.
How long do I wait???
20 Jul, 2011
They usually start sprouting in a couple of weeks.
20 Jul, 2011
What a relief!!! Now I'm really happy. I have so many that seem to take forever to germinate.

Alexandramou:
I actually started these on June 22...and the first seeds started germinating around July 5th (from what I remember).
22 Jul, 2011
Sown July 20th.....hopefully they will pop up beginning of August.
22 Jul, 2011
If it's hot, they should germinate fast.
23 Jul, 2011
Ohhh yeah. It is HOT!
23 Jul, 2011
Then the seeds should germinate fast. They need a lot of water in hot weather, though.

OK.
Guess what I bought?!?!?!
A coffee tree. It's a tiny little thing with three twigs but only cost me 3euros. It will grow but I'm not hoping for coffee beans. CA here I come...

Alexandramou:
Congratulations! :>) Coffee trees take around 3 years before they bloom for the first time.
Coffee trees start off growing slowly...then they grow a little faster as they get older.
My tree is full of ripe coffee cherries. I need to pick them because I think the many coffee cherries are draining the tree's of energy. My coffee tree isn't looking so hot.
There's dozens of seedlings popping up below my big coffee tree. This is the first time this has happened in summer. Generally, the seedlings pop up during the winter (during the winter rains).

Delonix,
I'm going to take a picture of it today. The one I wanted a few months ago that my sister-in-law beat me to has really grown.
Three years for a bloom :o( I want to smell the flower before then!!!
Make sure to let me know when you pick them!!!
25 Jul, 2011
Most likely all the ripe coffee cherries will be picked today...they are draining the plant of energy (I think)...also, the tree has more flower buds developing - again!.
My coffee tree is experiencing branch die-back...not sure what's causing it. I think it may be the very heavy crop of coffee cherries draining the tree (not positive though).
25 Jul, 2011
So.....how many cups of coffee do I get to drink??? ;o)))
28 Jul, 2011
There's so many coffee cherries...it's not funny! I picked a bunch yesterday...and there's still a lot more I need to pick. I'll post a pic of all the coffee cherries very soon.

Take a look at this Delonix, If you roast the cherries like this they have very low acidity....
Dark brown/ French/ Espresso
Shiny surface
445-460 F
Acidity - Low
Body - Full
Aroma - Medium
Sweetness - Full
Common roast for France and Italy

Thanks for the info. I don't drink coffee. I haven't drank a cup of coffee since around 1985.
31 Jul, 2011
I know you don't drink coffee....that's why I wanted you to see the acidity levels!
Don't you miss the aroma and the taste of a nice cup of coffee???
31 Jul, 2011

I like the smell of coffee, but don't miss it.

The only time I don't miss coffee is when my tummy is not well.
