Lotus flowers

These lotus flowers had been set to float in this container of water. Lotus being very symbolic in Buddhism. It is also traditional to have little fish in a container near to doorways - there were little fish in here too.

I THINK the botanical name is Nelumbo. Lotus are not hardy - they are from tropical areas. I took this photo in Thailand. The flowers in the photo in fact are not growing in this container - they've been picked, the petals folded back (which is traditional) and the flowers floated on the water surface.

Yes, I think they are there to eat the mosquito larva. I was told it is a Buddist tradition to have a container of water near to doors, but I can't remember the reason....

yes sid, this is hte very prob most buddist hav - i memry deep discus wiht freend bout why a brick no reveer in sam way - it weer no easy discuss!

very restful, calming, but i don't think it'd work outdoors here for at least half the year

Not in my garden, Marquerite, shot this on holiday in Thailand. They weren't growing in there, just floating.
