If you want to learn a bit about garden history - I recommend a visit to Geffrye Museum in East London. It's not huge, but really wonderfull garden to escape busy city life.

Looks really like a very good garden designer was involved. I like very much those apertures in the garden made from bushes, bricks or wood.
