they said we could not take any photo's because the flash was harmful to the furniture, and we were followed around very closely,

Its really worth a visit Karen if ever you are down this way. Its one of the most atmospheric houses I have ever visited..with lots of true and possible (and impossible probly) stories about it. Not big, but a real jewel of a place.
Smuggling too!

I agree 100% Tet with what you said to Karen, I would definately go there again,

This is nice...It's exactly the same as our old house Ceiling and Fireplace, huge..and the ceiling was constructed of mud and horsehair, between oak strips...What work we had to do there...but at the end it was as nice as the one in the pic...
The Buffet...against the wall...They are quite big..and very ornate...We had a Light Oak one, which we brought here with us, but it stands in the garage now...too big for anywhere...They usually have marble tops on the dresser part...I use the marble in my Kitchen for Pastry etc...

I hope what youve got it better Crissue..would have hated having to leave something like this!

Big difference now Tetra, that house is 500 + years old, and now we have a modern Bungalow...not sorry to leave...Am very content, where we are...

Actually, life is like that. We had a big Victorian House, high ceilings, cornices, grates etc but tiny garden..we downsized to a redbrick 1940's semi, sold half our furniture and got a nice sized garden front and back! Never thought we would leave it..but we love it here..fabulous views, open air..yep, funny ole life!

I agree...the work involved in the upkeep in those places is a lot...I suffered bad health then, couldn't make the stairs anymore, and OH couldn't manage everything and the land as well...so needs must...as they say...still nice while it lasted, and the knowledge that we restored it to it's former self...I'm sure the old Farmer would have been proud...it had been empty 40 years when we bought it...and it took us 7 years...to almost finish it...We put it one the market expecting it to take a while, and it sold in 4 weeks...so there was a bit left to do...not much tho...

Its true what they say, nothing is ours for keeps, no matter how much we pay for it! The best you can do is hand it down..and not many kids want to be saddled with responsibility these days.

Very true that...It's like that here, the youngsters want new builds, they're not interested in the old properties...ah well....

Crissue, your old house sounds like my dream :)

13 Sep, 2011

Hi Scottish, was a dream for someone else I'm afraid, a nightmare for us to put right...though we enjoyed most of it at the time...If you can walk straight in to something like it, fine...:))))

Oh the picture of the room is is beautiful.
Where was this taken? Is it a private home, or a tour one can go on?

24 Sep, 2011

Its a small manor house with a long history including ghosts..called Chambercombe. Its open to the public and is near a small seaside resort called Ilfracombe, on the northwest coast of Devon, Atac..you can just drive there and visit during opening hours.
